During the weeks after surgery you will be resting and trying to take it easy so you can build your strength back up. One of the things you can do during this recovery time is watch a box set or two. The team at A Bigger Life have put together their top 10 box sets on Netflix to get you started.
1) After Life (by Ricky Gervais)
This black-comedy is written by Ricky Gervais, who also plays the title role. It follows the life of Tony, who had a perfect life until his wife died. Since then he is struggling to come to terms with his loss and takes it out on those around him by saying and doing whatever he feels like.
2) Gilmore Girls
This classic US sit-com follows fast-talking mother and daughter Loralie and Rory who live in a small fictional town in Connecticut. Their close bond is in contrast to the relationship Loralie has with her own mother. There are plenty of laughs and drama with this one as we explore family, romance, friendship, social/class divide and ambition through the eyes of the lovable Gilmore Girls.
3) The Crown
A historical drama about the life of Queen Elizabeth II, based on a play by Peter Morgan. Starting with the early reign of the Queen, the series takes an inside look at life in Buckingham Palace through to modern times. The romance, rivalries, family loyalties and political backdrop of key events in the 20th century makes this a good watch.
An American crime drama that sees the Bryde family on the run after the money laundering scheme Marty (Jason Bateman) was involved in goes wrong. With a Mexican drug lord chasing after them, it’s pretty hairy at times!
5) Tiger King
Tiger King is a true crime docu-series that will leave you with your jaw on the floor. Zookeeper Joe Exotic is the main character in the series as we explore the bizarre underworld of big cat breeding in the USA.
6) When They See Us
A thought provoking dram mini-series based on true events surrounding a rape in New York’s Central Park in the 1980s. Five young men/boys were wrongly convicted and sent to jail for the crime.
7) Modern Family
Arguable America’s most loved family (ok, they get a run for their money from the Simpsons), Modern Family is a mockumentary following three modern-day families who are related. There are plenty of one liners in this and the characters are relatable and lovable as we see them navigate life, love and everything in California life.
Esty leaves behind all she has ever known to flee her arranged marriage in an ultra-orthodix Jewish community in Brooklyn. She arrives in Berlin alone with no idea how to navigate secular life trying to avoid being found by her husband and family. Based loosely on the autobiography of Deborah Feldman.
9) Derry Girls
Derry Girls follows the lives of 5 fictional teenagers growing up during the ‘troubles’ in Northern Ireland during the 90’s, showing the highs and lows of teenage life.
A Norwegan-American series about a former American gangster who moves to Lillehammer in Norway to escape his past and start a new life.
