Pain after any surgical procedure is common however it should not be overwhelming, and it should not be uncontrollable.

If your having a planned procedure you should have the opportunity to discuss your options for pain management with the anesthetist or with the pain nurse. Sometimes it’s the fear of the unknown that causes the stress and anxiety, hopefully when you have the opportunity to discuss your options that this will help alleviate your fears.

Post operatively when you are recovering in hospital from your surgery the nurses and doctors will regularly monitor your pain levels, but it is important that you let them know exactly how you are feeling and if the pain has worsened.

There are many different methods for pain management and people come to surgery with different experiences and different medical histories. Try not and judge yourself against other people who are recovering next to you or in your hospital ward.
