Hints and tips for finding your local stoma nurse

Stoma care nurses have been around for about 30 years, if you had your surgery pre 30 years ago you probably aren’t aware where you can find your local stoma nurse.

Here are some hints and tips on how to find your local stoma nurse:

  • The first would be to go to your own GP, ask them to write you a referral letter to your local hospital for an appointment with the stoma nurse.
  • Most stoma care teams take self referrals, you could just phone your local hospital directly and ask to be put through to the stoma care department. If you aren’t sure where your local hospital is or if you’re new to the area, just Google stoma care services in the area you’re in.
  • If you aren’t able to get to the hospital there are community nurses who can visit you at your home. Majority of the product manufacturers have community nurses, if you visit the company websites they may have a stoma nurse in your area.
  • Within every country there are usually ostomy voluntary associations, they might be a good point of contact as they will be able to advise where to find the local stoma care nurse.
